What Is There To Do In Tiny Highlands County?

Before my experience in the Mason G. Smoak Youth Leadership Highlands Program, my answer would be either "not much of anything" or "we have a bowling alley." Going into the program, I really didn't know what to expect, but I think that was part of the fun. Every day was something completely new and totally different, which really opened my eyes as to how diverse our county is. Not only did we visit the stereotypes of our area, such as the citrus industry and agriculture, but we also learned about the opposite side of the spectrum. Who knew that right here in Sebring there was a call center that helps people all across the country? And how many people could tell you the history behind our Sebring racetrack and airport? My point is that there are so many things to do in this quaint town of ours that not even all of the locals know about. I would have to say that the most memorable event in this program was the Grocery Store Race. We all had to raise money from local sponsors such as Long's Air Conditioning and CitraPac, Inc. Then, early on a Sunday morning, at the new Publix in Sebring, all of the teams from both YLH and another organization who was wanting to help the community raced shopping carts down the aisles, collecting all kinds of items that we then loaded up on a truck and sent to the food bank. It was great to compete against each other, but knowing that win or lose we were still making the lives of people in our area better. Overall, I have learned so many new things about the town that I live in and I now have a lot more to tell when someone asks "What's there to do in Highlands County?".
