Youth Leadership Highlands is a year-long program that focuses on the development of high school student leadership skills. Class students meet six times throughout the year to develop skills and visit different parts of Highlands County.
Applications are available winter and early spring (check our MGSF calendar on our events page) for current high school freshman in Highlands County.
Participants are chosen the end of their freshman year and the program runs through their sophomore year, with an optional second year in their junior year.
The Youth Leadership Highlands program emphasized the importance of
Highlands County agricultural and environmental industries during a full day of
leadership education and training. Several different private and public organizations
take part in educating a class local high school sophomore students about different aspects of Highlands County agriculture and environment. The students have picked strawberries and learned about plant cycles and packing at Atlantic Blue Operations; they learned about Florida dairy and cattle industries; studied the caladium business at Happiness Farms in Lake Placid; toured Delray Plants acres of greenhouses full of ornamental houseplants in Venus; and been informed of the challenges of disease & insects facing citrus growers today; just to name a few.
